About
This project involved the construction of a new Ambulance base on the site of Merlin Park University Hospital, a stand-alone structure that meets the evolving needs of the Ambulance service in Galway city. The Ambulance Base is designed as a long low building which sits respectfully beside its neighbours. The neighbouring campus buildings are predominantly long low buildings with a horizontal emphasis from the mid-20th Century with a modernist aesthetic.
The Ambulance Base has a public facade which opens to the south and a northern elevation which addresses the secure yard where there are canopied parking bays for the Ambulances. The Design incorporates a long canopy to the south side echoing the architectural language and devices employed within the original campus design. The building is a part two-storey part single-storey abutting a storey and a half volume which contains a garage, canopied wash bays and associated ancillary accommodation.
